St Pirans Day

St Piran is the patron saint of Cornwall, England...March 5th marks the celebration of St Pirans day in Cornwall, England...it is a regional day of celebration similar to St Patricks day in Ireland...St Piran is also known as the patron saint of Cornish Miners...many of whom left Cornwall...and emigrated around the world to pursue the mining trade...northern New Jersey has a large concentration of people of Cornish descent...because of the mining industry that flourished for hundreds of years in the area...Cornish miners were known to be the best hard rock miners in the world when they came to this area to work in the mines...they also brought one of their favorite foods to the area...the Cornish Pastie...the flag of St Piran is a vertical white cross on a black background...representing the tin mined in Cornwall...
hack, that would have been good to know on March 4th... I might've been able to get some homemade pasties out of Mom.
I've mentioned it multiple times, and there's practically a whole HL thread on them BAF. It's called Rockie's Pasties and is on the parallel street behind Main St in down town Wharton. (if there is a down town) They're very good and have been written up in the Daily Record. Multi-generational Polish family (Rodkiewicz) runs it.

as far as pasties...i am well versed in Rockies...they began making pasties after the Cornish miners requested them...the miners found pasties to be easy to take into the mines and heat on a shovel with a candle... because they did not leave the mines to eat meals...most Cornish like my family prefer to make their own pasties...here an old picture of four Cornish boys enjoying pasties
