Luckygirl...i love all the old pictures too...the pictures come from a variety of sources...i am a history buff...many famous and not so famous photographers passed through this way over the years...including Walker Evans...i have also acquired some rare negatives...and pictures privately...here is a nice picture of the Hackettstown railroad station with a train from the late 1960s

There you go again...you have me daydreaming of the Erie Lackawanna and that great train station. Where were the preservationists in the 60s ? That station should have been restored.

Re: Waybill

Bob...this shot of the station is from 100 years ago...it will give you an idea of how big the station was in its prime...when the railroad was very important to Hackettstown...

Where was the train station relative to the one we have now?

That could be my Dad up in the cab...40 years on the RR.... :)

Re: Waybill

coach...the original Hackettstown train station was right between the current Tickners feed store and the now closed Hackettstown Ford... right off of main street...the only traces of the original Railroad station are the remains of the concrete platform right near the existing railroad tracks...if you follow the chain link fence along the right of way...you will find the remains easily...also part of the original station parking lot may still have cobblestone paving visible...funny thing some folks who visit Hackettstown mistake the new Tickners building near the the tracks to be the original Hackettstown station...

Thanks Waybill, but was the station on the H-town Ford side or the Tickner side? And the pic you posted...is that looking east bound or westbound...? And what are the buildings in the background? So many questions... :)

the station was on the Htown ford side...the picture is looking eastbound...the buildings in the background are a business of some sort...judging by the lettering on the side...

coach , the train station was on the car dealership side. The picture is looking west bound. I am not sure of those buildings in the background. Tickners dominated the landscape on the north side of the railroad tracks. There was a textile sock company not too far away from Tickners(near the Police station location in the 60s and 70s) and a large building next to Tickeners that sold lighting fixtures , but I have a feeling that was not it's original design.
Does anyone remeber that large yacht like boat that was being built/refinished over many years across the street from the Police station ? I wonder if it ever made it to any water ? It looked so out of place. Just some old town trivia.

Great pictures! Was disappointed to go to shorpy.com and didn't see anything when I typed in "Hackettstown" into the search.

Re: Waybill

Bob...the boat you speak of was Red Grogans...yacht...he worked on that project for years...and it never came to be completed...he sold off all he had and left town back in the late 70s...he moved south...and passed away ...not long ago...the textile factory you speak of was Elizabeth Undergarment...they manufactured and also sold right from the site...that building has now been subdivided and is home to several businesses as well as a pre-school...the lighting store you speak of was Licon lighting...they were located in a store front next to the old Shop-Rite on main street...they have since relocated to rt 57 in mansfield township new jersey...ps here is what the old main street shop rite location looks like now...its a strip mall...with a Quik-chek...laundry...liquor store etc...
