Turkey Brook Dog Park
Anyone know if they have plowed out Turkey Brook yet? Went there last weekend to take the dogs for a run and it was closed.
How was the park today - very muddy? Were there many dogs there? I'm considering going tomorrow with my little guy. Thanks.
Someone- There really wasn't that much mud. There was one section with mud but the dogs did not go there it was in the corner. It's still snow covered but it was packed. When we first got there I would say there were 3-5 dogs and then by the time Salem was tired out there was like 10. We are going there tomorrow too.
Awesome, thanks! Maybe we'll see you two tomorrow (if my little furball isn't exhausted from today's long walk, which he likely won't be!)
Just wanted to let everyone know that the dog park is closed. The note on the door says:
"It has been brought to our attention that the de-icer we are using may not be animal friendly. We are investigating the de-icer that we use; The safety of dog owners and dogs is our first priority. If the current de-icer we are using is not animal friendly we will seek a new vendor and go out to bid.
It has also been brought to my attention that dog owners have been verbally abusing the township employees. This will not be tolerated. If you have a problem please contact officer Willie Cirone at 973-6------ (Sorry, my phone cut the number off).
Please note that Billy is not a township employee and is not allowed within 100 feet of the dog park.
As for the good news, I have secured a dog park hotline number which can be used to check the status of the park. The number is 973-691-0900 x 7003"
I called the number and the message just says "The dog park at Turkey Brook is closed". If anyone had an estimate of when it will reopen, I would appreciate it! Also, does anyone know what is up with the line about Billy not being a township employee and is not allowed near the dog park? Is this someone that I should keep an eye out for?
I thought that the issue with the de-icer (if they're talking about the paw pad sensitivity) was made public a while ago? Maybe this is an issue of the animals ingesting it? Either way, it was responsible of them do close the park if there is any doubt that it can harm the animals. Furthermore, I'm always at the park and I've never heard anyone verbally assault anyone (except for issues when dogs start to fight and the owners don't want to leave - then some people have yelled profanities until the fighting dogs left.) I don't think it's fair to blame everyone for that, however I understand that they are notifying people that it won't be tolerated.
To add, people MUST stop bringing toys and food to the park (unless they are in there alone)! Not all dogs are good with toys or food around other dogs and people MUST realize this before someone gets hurt! My dog was bit last week (thankfully it barely broke the skin) when he innocently went to sniff a toy. I've been rather displeased with the fact that there are so many toys in the park and so many toy possessive dogs there at the same time! Have some common sense people!
Thanks for the info Happy Homemaker. I too am curious as to who Billy is?
I have gone to the dog park many times, although not regularly and have never even seen a township employee there. People were verbally abusing them? Anyone know what that is about?

That's weird that it's closed now for the ice melt. I was there Sat, Sun & Monday and the snow and ice were pretty much gone.
I also know that we knew more about Billy. Considering the one day it was just me and Salem up there and there was a guy that walked up with out a dog but I'm just assuming he was checking out the dog park. I did have my phone out just in case since Salem wouldn't do much if something were to happen but lick them.
I need to make her tougher....maybe putting bunny ears on her make her too sweet lol
Have not been since fall but I've never seen any township people there either. I have heard people yelling (one person in particular seemed to always get mad whenever another dog approached hers) but nothing else. My biggest worry about the dog park isn't the other dogs but rather the other people!
Ok, good because I'm taking Salem there.
It's my last week off of work so thought I would take her
Yup, I got a job. Nope I haven't posted it so you didn't miss any thing.
I start on Monday. It's going to be so hard for me to leave Salem I got laid off the week after she came home and now she is 6 months old. LOL I even looked in to doggie daycares but they are crazy expensive
Wonderful news, Nosila. Best of luck to you in your new endeavor. Don't worry about the pup. She'll be fine. I worried about Lucky when I started back to work. I was recently unemployed when we got her until about 5 months ago--she was eighteen months old with severe separation anxiety. But she's doing fine. She occasionally gets into mischief, but she's a trooper and she can, at times, be left for twelve hours without a problem.
Congrats Nosila! I'm glad you have found a job! Salem will be fine... I'm sure she will adjust, don't worry.
Congrats! Nosila, I too checked into doggie daycare but for the cost of two dogs I would have been broke! I do not think the places around here offer TRUE daycare anyway. The places in the city actually play games, plan activities, etc... just like a daycare for children so it is worth the money.
Salem will do fine, but I would suggest over the next few days you start leaving her alone- a little be longer each day so that she can start getting used to it. I would also put out "special" toys when I was going to work. The best thing that works for me is trying to get them tired as possible before I leave this way they sleep for most of the day. Good luck!
Thanks every one. I'm excited to start working again!!
I plan to tire her out as much as I can at night and on the weekends. That way she will sleep under the bed all day. I will be fine in the summer because we can walk at night, go swimming, hiking, dog park. Winter is going to be hard trying to tire her out but we have some time to figure it out.
We are heading to the dog park around noon today if anyone else wants to come. My friend is coming with her 3 dogs and another friend with their boxer.
Riverrat,
Turkey Brook is in Mount Olive. If you are traveling on Rt 46 from Hackettstown towards Budd Lake, you make the right hand turn after Sandy's Liquors (I think there is a Hess station right after the turn). Then go up the road about a mile and a half, and you will see the entrance to the park on the right hand side (and a really pretty old stone building). The dog park is all of the way in the back. Its a really great park. There is basketball courts, tennis courts, soccer and football fields, playgrounds, etc.
Tracy- No lucky
I was there from 12-1:45 and Lucky didnt make and appearance at that time :(
Sorry, Nosila--he decided to take her hiking instead. I think he went to Cataract Park off of Schooley's Mountain.
How was the dog park?
I never realized that there was a dog park at THAT park, haha. My son has had soccer tournaments at a Turkey brook Park, but I figured the name was a coincidence. We always go via Rt 80 to Exit 27 and then down 206...as soon as Happy Homemaker mentioned the old building I knew it had to be one and the same.
Dog park was pretty good. There was one dog that wanted to ruin it for the other but another guy asked him to leave. His dog was very nasty!!!
Update: the dog park is currently CLOSED for maintenance. I wish they'd give us dog owners some warning, but at the same time I'm happy that they're fixing any issues that there are with it.
Someone- I am sure if you provide the park association with the paper ink envelopes and stamps they would be more then happy to send out notifications of park closures
"Dog park was pretty good. There was one dog that wanted to ruin it for the other but another guy asked him to leave. His dog was very nasty!!!"
Thats why Murray and I are nervous to go back. There's always someone there that insists on having their not so friendly dog there.
One of my friends met me up there last week and her little puppy got attacked was bleeding not enough for a vet but was still bleeding. The owner of the dog that bit her tried to make my friend feel like it was her fault because the puppy went after the mean dogs ball.......
Are you kidding me?! There is a VERY clear sign right outside the gate that says..NO TOYS! For this very specific reason! I keep hearing these horror stories about the park. Luckily, Murrays never gotten attacked but last time I was there there was a woman whose dog "wasn't friendly" (these words spoken from her mouth) and attacked a dog that didnt do ANYTHING...wasn't even near her dog. She didnt leave after that...she stayed with the dog on a leash over by the picnic table!! She took the dog off the leash and it attacked the same dog!! The woman called the police and everyone started screaming "get your f'ing dog outa here." People just DONT get it and are totally delusional! These people ruin it for everyone and I'm not sure I'm willing to go back and take this risk of my Murray getting attacked.
If you are there and an aggressive dog is in the park the PD will have them removed and site them for breaking the rules the only way its going to stop is if people report it.
IJM - No need to be rude, I simply meant I wish that they had posted a sign along the lines of "the park will be closed on x/x/10 to x/x/10"!
Anom - I totally agree! There are rules for a reason, and next time I see a toy, I will speak up. I've seen too many fights over toys.
To add...oooh, Anom - I remember that incident! That dog should have NEVER been at the park!!!!!
No toys and NO TREATS. I can't stand it when people stand there with treats in their pockets for their dogs. Dogs can SMELL treats. Especially mine. So if you don't want my dog following you all over the park, trying to get in your pants, leave the treats at home or in your car.
Agreed Tracy. So many people break these rules and this is why I havent been back in SOO long. And it's a shame cuz I know Murray is missing it. Once it gets nicers, I'll have to really think if I'm going to go back. I wish there was someone there that was in charge of the park for stupid people who don't abide by the rules.
I agree. Even worse is when young kids bring in food. Parents - if you don't want you child jumped on/knocked over, then don't let them bring in food/toys/ or just don't bring the young children in in the 1st place (I've got nothing against children... I love kids... I just don't want them getting hurt! It's a dog park!)
Haha, yeah. It's a dog park, not a petting zoo. I see people bring their kids up from the playground to gawk at the dogs like they're at the pet store in the mall.
Please please please do not bring your children into the fenced area. First of all, a lot of the dogs (mine included!) get so excited to be around all of the other dogs that they wiggle and run around at full speed, and can easily knock down and injure a child without meaning to. In addition, a lot of dogs are just as protective, if not more so, of their family as they are with their toys. Another dog almost tried to fight mine when he tried to go up and greet the children. Also, when a lot of dogs play, there is some nipping and jumping involved. I would hate to see a child get bitten by being too close to some playing dogs, and then most likely the poor dog would be required to be put to sleep. Bad situation for everyone...
Whoops, I'm guilty of the treats. I read the notice about the toys but I must have missed the treats ones....Sorry. I bring treats with me every where I go it helps me with training. I guess I won't be doing that anymore....
Does anyone have any info about the proposed cat annex? My mittens is a hot little potato right now and i'm curious as to its unvailing.
I haven't heard anything about a cat annex?? I'd imagine that if it's anything like a dog park that would be VERY dangerous for the cats unless every owner brings proof of negative FIV/FELV testing before entering.
On a side note - does anyone know when the dog park is set to re-open? I'd think that if the fence was the only thing which needed to be fixed, that would be quite easy (and apparently it hasn't been done yet.....)
Their msg. machine has been updated to say that the funding for the fence repair has been approved and that they are hoping to be opened by the weekend of the 24th - can't wait!
