The Showplace Dover NJ

lets face it if the subject of The Nook comes up...anyone who went to The Nook...must have seen a concert or two at the Showplace...The Good Rats etc...David Johanson...The Ramones...Robert Gordon...Leslie West...Chuck Berry...

The Ramones at the Show Place was AWESOME
I remember pogoing the whole night and after like three encores the bouncers were starting to get a little more than pushy about closing down for the night. But eff them we're punks and took no sheet from no one.
Those other shows sound real good too. David Johanson also known as Buster Poindexter and a New York Doll. I think Robert Gordon must have been very cool.

They still play I think with one of their kids in the band. Once in a while they do an original band reunion.

The Capitol Theater in Passaic is another great venue.
I saw U2 in 1982-3 not sure but it was their War tour.
They were mostly unknown except for the largly punk crowd that showed up that night. I almost got in a fight when a bunch of neo-nazi type punks came stomping across the lobby bullying there way through the crowd but I wouldn't move. I can still see the liddle twinkies sneering at me as they decided that going around me & me friends may be wise = ]

There are some very cool videos on youtube from the capitol theater including my favorite and the only band that matters The CLASH

Blackfoot used to play the Showplace all the time...they used to live in and around Hackettstown many years ago...they even played a concert at the Riverside Restaurant...in Liberty township...the place on rt 46 with the railroad car...that was in the mid-70s...believe it or not Blackfoot used to rehearse on the property that later became Pequest fish hatchery...ps i was at the Showplace when a group of skinheads walked during a concert started slam dancing and caused a riot...

Wow! I don't remember blackfoot playing at the hatchery. That is nostalgic. At the time they were one of my favorites. No reservations album very hard to find! Remember the rock pile in byram? I saw The Marshall Tucker Band at the Baker Theater in Dover last year. Every person that walked up the stairs in my isle fell into me. I was like, can't these old farts walk anymore? I felt like giving walking lessons. It was like I was at a Geritol convention. It was scary that people from my era had let themselves go like that. Hey, if you were there and fell on me remember to go get some exercise before you try to walk up a flight of stairs at a concert in the dark!! To top it off, the only original member of the MTB was Doug Gray and all he did was play tambourine because the old bastard can't sing anymore and he was the young guy with a great voice back in the day!! How old does that make you feel? Yes, Rock isn't what it used to be but man we had a blast!!!

Another pretty face, Flossie! great, I remember all those bands! thanks for the stroll down memory lane. How about the ramble Inn? on 206. Actually I think that time period had alot of bands playing locally, hey it was the 70's. I remember meeting Rick(the rattlesnake) Medlocke at the New York tea garden in Morristown. He seemed a little high strung if i remember correctly. I would have to say that Frank Zappa at FDU was one of the most entertaining shows I have ever seen!

I used to see Flossie at The North Shore House at Swartswood Lake (my alltime favorite nightspot) , also Triad , and Doors tribute band Godspeed . Back then you bought the Aquarian paper to see where the bands where playing . Jersey Central and Sweet Buns (later The Priscilla Harriett band) at the Governors Inn at Lake Hopatcong , the Blue Sparks from Hell at the Stanhope House , Blackfoot , Yasgur's Farm ,and Magnum at Hucksters/The Sanstone , and Old Number 7 and Blue Emerald at the Mt.Lake Casino . I remember once seeing Flossie at the Caberet in Ledgewood where you could look through a small window in a door connecting the bar to the bowling alley and see people bowling - we walked through it , bowled a couple of games then went back to the bar . Good bands , good times , and bad hangovers !

I remember around 79-80 or so taking the road past the Walpack Inn and coming out by the Ramble Inn on 206 and seeing a sign that said Steppenwolf Tonight . Don't know if they were closed by then and I doubt if John Kay was in that particular rendition of that band , but it was still cool to see . The North Shore House had four - one up front where the pool tables were , one long bar in the hallway that went to the bandroom/dance floor , and one on either side of the dance floor . Out in the boonies by Swartswood Lake with good bands always , be they rock or jazz it was the best place I remember to go back in the day .

Mostly though we listened to Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Stranglers, XTC, Joy Division, and Suicidal Tendencies at work in those days. Hey, it was the 80's.

Blue Emerald used to play at Dizzy Duncan's all the time but I missed all those shows because I liked to stay in Sussex and Warren counties. Blue Emerald was always fun at the Ramble Inn and the Hainesburg because those were the places that stayed open later. What about the Speakeasy in Sparta? I think that's a Chinese restaurant now?

I never got to the Showplace for any shows, nor to many of the other venues listed unfortuantely.

In the Mid 80's I occasionally hung out with a guy named Brian Kane, who was an exceptional Bassist, playing in CCM's band, Jazz Band and several other projects, including with a number of older, more experienced musicians in an Alt Jazz/Rock group called "Kahnartist". I went with him to watch the group play at Johnny Dirt's "Dirt Club" in Bloomfield. Anyone remember that place???

While at the Dirt Club, I also saw a group that I thought had an entrancing sound. The group's name was "Ground Floor" and I later found they were based in Dover, not far from where I later lived, but I was never able to find any recordings by either band. Anyone heard of either band and remember the old "Dirt Club?

I don't remember the band members' names since it's been so long. They did have a female on vocals/keyboards though I think. I just remember being really impressed with their sound, somewhat alternative for the time as well as hypnotic to me. I believe I saw a listing for them in an Aquarian Annual Issue that showed an address (on Lincoln Ave. or close to it in Dover, NJ as being their contact address too, but didn't have a chance to try to contact them at the time).

If you don't mind asking her if she was a member of the group and if she has any recordings, I'd really appreciate it! You can email me privately via my email envelope to give me info if she does. I still have a turntable as well as cassette player and of course a CD player so I'm covered for all media except 8-track. No wait, I even have a tuner/8 track dinosaur recorder/player, but I don't like that media at all - lol.

I just wish there was some recordings of my friend's group "Kahnartist" as well (especially my favorite song "Syncopated City"), but I lost contact with him too after several moves.

Loved the Lighthouse for Disco & anyone remember "The Castle" in I believe was Wayne, NJ in late 1970's-early 80's during Disco; that was the place to go then hit an After-Hour club just up the road or hit Manhattan After Hour clubs! The ShowPlace was right around the corner from where I lived and Larry and the boys treated me really well there. Anybody remember the big biker called Preacher? He was a regular there and a part-time bouncer. Also Joe Berger, the sound tech who would sit in a room by himself and weedle away super-fast jazz/rock licks on his guitar for hours? He's now a highly sought after sound engineer and has played in bands with John Entwhistle, Jon Hammond, and Billy Cobham. Didn't see these names mentioned: The Towpath [W. For you South Jersey shore lovers..how about Johnies Dance Band at the Playpen in Wildwood. We also had Cold Blast and Steel and concert Mondays..the likes of Johnie Winter, Dan Folgerberg(sp), Robert Palmer performed there right below the disco room. The Royal Manor North in New Brunswick also brings along some fine memories with live music. To Oldman- thanx for these cool pictures- whoever you are, maybe we know each other - I enjoy the neat perspective on H Town history.

Re: The Showplace Dover NJ

i saw Joan Jett and the Blackhearts in early 1982...at the Royal Manor North...it was billed as the last small hall concert By Joan Jett...the band was great...the concert hall however was way oversold...and very crowded...and when the concert was over we went outside into a full blown ice storm...which made for a very difficult ride home...

Godspeed was not a Doors tribute band. You may be confusing them with Crystal Ship who came later. Godspeed was active from 1969-1976 performing all over the tri-state area with brief tours out west and down south. Specialties included Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Procol Harum, Doors, Moody Blues, Genesis and original material in 75-76. Headlined several times at The Showplace.

Sam the Band won the WDHA Original Band contest in 1980 I believe, and they palyed a gig at the Showplace that was broadcast live on the radio. Is there a recording of that around? That was a kick ass show. Also chatted with Chuck Berry after a gig there in the 80's. He was standing out front while someone was bringing his rental car around. Blackfoot, Good Rats........That was a great venue

Hey doesn't anyone talk about the greatest of all the New Jersey Clubs? MOTHERS? I was in the band "Dirtyworks" we were the like the house band there in the 90's. What a great place! Joan Jett played there in the 90's and her thing was that she would turn off the air conditioning and get the place about 90+ degrees! Tons of great memories from the :Lighthouse" in Hopatcong too! My band "Social Fixx" plays there now "Pavinci's" which it is called now....

I am home. This is just too good to be true to me... I found my people!! I know just about every place mentioned, and played at a good number of them. My whole youth is right here on this page! Does that (nice) creeper still own the Show Place? Larry? Its still there? Can't tell you how many times my band played there. Flossie - my gosh - she was "aged" at the time she was performing so she must be quite an elder by now:) Good Rats, Nasty Lass, Blackfoot... I have SO many stories. We were always in the Aquarian - used to be friends with one of the writers, Michael Greenblatt. The record stores in Newton (Country Pie) and Hackettstown carried our albums, which now go for some big bucks on E-bay, believe it or not:) Mothers. Yup, my husband's band played there. ACTUALLY, I MET him at the SHOWPLACE and we've been together for 33 years! LOL. Sam the Band. Oh wow. My dh played in Berry's back up band at the Show Place. Nice guy (Chuck), but so cheap, he just picked musicians locally & threw them $50. each - no rehearsal:) - to play with him on the road instead of hiring a band to tour with him. By the way... My dh is J. Howard Duff, The J. Howard Duff Band, and after we met & married in the late 70's, we did all kinds of projects together. Our bands were Rox and Partners in Crime - PIC was the most well known, doing an album under the Mutha Label in the mid 80s. LOL, we still play (here in SC) Blues mostly. Back to the roots. Well, this was fun. I want to come back & write more about some of the earlier posts. I am SURE I knocked back a few with you guys! I'm from Morristown & we lived in Sussex County for years. Morristown - Joint in the Woods, Thirsty Ear, Purple Haze, Stone Fox... overwhelmed with memories! THANKS SO MUCH:) oh yeah, we played at the Dirt a lot and also many times at the Brighton Bar in Long Branch. Opened for Suicidal Tendencies, Minor Threat, Ramones... later!

I was very excited to find this site! Back in the day I was a Barmaid at the Rock Pile in Stanhope. In my off time my friends and I frequented just about every club mentioned here and then some. I had the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with many of the people and bands that have been mentioned. Some I am happy to say are still friends. I currently live in Southwest Arizona. When I talk to people here about the Glory Days of Rock and Roll on the East side of the country they look at me like "yeah right" or "who cares". If they could only get inside our heads and have the memories we do! At the time I don't think we were always conscious of how lucky we were. I remember when The Ramones were just a band (although tons of fun!), Joe Perry was a strung out has been, and Dee Snyder was a joke! At the time it was all true! OOPS! Who could see the future; right? Anyway, thank you all for bringing back some great memories. Just for a little while it was nice to be that young girl behind the bar again in short shorts, navy blue stockings and stiletto heels. Always remember to support live music!

OLDMAN: I am sorry you had a bad experience at the Rockpile , but HOW DARE YOU insinuate that all the barmaids were stealing! I can assure you that we did NOT "ALL play that game"! If you felt that you had been ripped off you should have taken it to the management. I saw girls get fired for less. There may have been exceptions, but for the most part we worked our butts off, and there were nights when those shoes made our feet bleed, but hey, as long as the guys got the show right! I did not drink then, and I do not drink now, and I saw many unseemly things go on from my side of the bar, but I would never call every customer a DRUNKEN LOOSER, or every guy who looked at me a SLEAZY PERVERT, although we put up with them too (the bouncers walked us to and from our cars). All that being said, I was there to have fun and I have many good memories of that time in my life. I am not going to let a DRUNKEN, SLEAZY LOOSER like you ruin them for me! (How's it feel?" You did remember the outfits....)

I don't know how I came across this site but, I played guitar with Gene Allen and the Pawns, Desperate Men and Tommy James and the Shondells. It was a real hoot to read everybody's recollections of an incredible time for live music in Jersey. Aunt Kate's was especially memorable. Imagine if you had to be there four nights a week every week. I drove up from Newark. My '72 Cadillac, 8-track and doob for the ride home. I'll have to check out Kinderhook's FB page. A big Wahoo to everybody that survived it all.

This thread is great. i have been to about 80% of the places mentioned. Someone asked about the house band at Govenor's Inn. It was named KIX. The black bass player is one of my best friends to this day. His name is Cecil Lyons and now lives in Las Vegas. The club was owned by Al Kessel and he originally started the band (his brother Bobby was the drummer). At one time during the bands last year together it included Larry the original keyboard player from Another Pretty Face. KIX had two keyboards, Larry and Peter (Peter was a founding member of Cats On A Smooth Surface). Good memories. Even The Monkees played there in 1977 (MIckey Dolenz and Davy Jones Govenor's Inn went through many different cahnges in the past 20 years and was torn down about 4 years ago. A Quick Check is on that spot now.
The Rockpile started life as the Searchlight and hosted bands like Blackfoot, Twisted Sister, another Pretty Face. The offical Blackfoot website has a free MP3 download of them playing at the Searchlight. When it was the Rockpile I saw Herman's Hermits there in the early 80's. I lived within walking distance of Aunt Kates so I knew it well.
The Showplace was great with all the bands that played there Godspeed, Blackfoot, Good Rats, Dymond Jym. The Ramones were great there.
You are right about Peter Frampton playing at Betrands Island in The Villa in 1974 (or was it 1973?). It was a great show.
The place with the best bands had to be the Joint in the Woods in Parsippany. I saw Badfinger, Nazareth, Raspberries (twice!! One of my favorites), Commander Cody, 10CC, Elephants Memory/Plastic Ono Band, and one of the last club shows that KISS did in early 1974.
Thanks for the memories folks.

I worked the Searchlight from 73- to closing in 74 or 75? as a bouncer, saving money for a sound system. Had a blast!

Did sound and repairs for Blackfoot (with John Vasillou sound engineer) at various venues.

Supplied sound systems and engineering for local bands such as Moonshine and supplied systems at Community and others.

My Cousin Steve Armstrong was a V.P. of Community Theater, so I saw a lot of shows or provided sound systems for many acts. Great acoustics and great facility. Meatloaf played there one night and threw his mike on floor. You could hear him sing over the sound system.

Anyone remember a band called the Midnight Special ? They did a fantastic rendition of the song Shooting Star and other Bad Company tunes. last time i saw them was at Governors back in like 1979. Our gang was seated at the far side of the bar mu buddy grabbed a bottle of southern comfort from lower booze rack behind the bar he just reached over in a lightning quik move when the bartender turned around.
He poured drinks for us all nite from under the lip of the bar !
We got pretty sauced that nite.
then there was the Lighthouse on Lake Hopatcong.
Moving east for a second: the Hole in the Wall on rt 17 ?
Back west on Rt 46 the Arrow Lounge ?
there was another bar on the east bound side of 46 just east of the Arrow can't remember the name though.
the band Icarian played those places alot .
Final Exam, remember it changed hands/ names then shut down forever.

Community Theatre aka Morris Stage, saw these great bands there and never paid more than $8 for a ticket still have the stubs :
AC/DC opening for Savoy Brown.1978 Their first US tour: AC/DC with Bon Scott melted the house down ! $ 2
Angel opening for The Godz 1978 $5
Jean Luc Ponty 1978 Elaine Boosler opened and got booed off the stage ! $8
Brand X & John Mclaughlin's Electric band 1979 As we watched Jon McLaughlin from right in front stage left, My buddy got asked if he was Phil Collins by another audience member ! $7
Horslips 1978 , they also played at the Showplace, What a great band ! $4
ohh the great old Morris Stage currently called the Mayo Center. Now I work on stage crew there occasionally !

Another obscure place was the Forest Inn I think it was in New Providence or somewhere out there deep in the woods of Watchung res It was an old lodge type building great for southern rock groups !
Yeah the Ramble Inn great location !
I worked an outdoor gig at the Walpack Inn in the 80s It was the Beach Boys for sure with possibly Chicago as well , a great sunny summer day with a huge crowd !

The Showplace though was legendary: Bruford, Horslips, Allan Holdsworth's I.O.U. etc etc

Very true that Joe Berger would sit at the FOH position and play his guitar over the house music before showtime. First time in there, me and friend were commenting on these blazing guitar leads on the sound system, playing over music we already knew but wondering who was playing this ad lib stuff. Then we peered over the gear by the mix position and there was Joe hidden by all those racks just ripping away on his guitar playing to JLP, Return to Forever, etc etc. that was a show in itself. Most of the patrons waiting for the main show were clueless !

Years later I was in a Jazz Rock originals group and our drummer knew Joe and he set a date on a dark day at the club for us to record several songs with Joe engineering. We had the place all to ourselves and it was a great time playing on that same stage as all those other great musicians had.

I noticed that the guitarist for Renegade put cotton in his ears before Blackfoot came on, and thought to myself -this Blackfoot band is definitely for me!. I was right.

The Rockpile, know it all to well. Fun hearing stories about it. I was behind the scenes watching the bands from a distance as I was too young to be in the bar, but was there anyways as my dad was one of the owners. Bands that played regularly were Crystal Ship, Muddy Creek, Uncle John Band, Soft Parade, Sticky Fingers and Rubyiat (sp?) to name a few. When the drinking age changed in the early 80's it had a huge impact on the business. What followed were a couple of name changes (The Funhouse, The Bunk House, Rocking R Bar), a switch to Country Music (Johnny Paycheck and Dave Dudley played there), and ultimately a short-lived strip club that all but sealed it's fate. What's been written on the pages of this forum only scratches the surface of what went down at the Rockpile, it would be tough to find a bar anywhere these days that could match it.

The Ramones gig at the show place ended abruptly when they blew the electric box outside. Lights went off and after a few minutes people were yelling to play.minutes later firemen rushed in yelling at us all to get out.

Does anyone remember the name of a club near Lake Hopatcong that had the bandstand up in a Loft ??? What a place to play, we had to use a block and tackle to hoist our Hammond B3 up to the loft and then back down at the end of the night.

I played Bass in the early -mid seventies with a band called "Dead Brandy Dog" .We were the house band for over a year and a half at Mother's in Greenwood Lake and opened the Wayne "Mother's" along with a band called "Jeremy"!! and played a good number of clubs mentioned in these posts from 1971 to 1976. Any information you can give would be appreciated
