Attention Motorcycle RidersAnyone interested in going for a ride this morning? CBGPZP and I are meeting at Quick Chek on Stiger and Main between 8:30 and 9:00 am. Then we're off to who knows where. We had a great ride today !!! Went to New Hope via Rts 611 & 32 . I have never been on those roads and they are excellent for riding.
May have to get a HL ride out there soon !! does anyone who rides work on their own bikes. I got a couple questions. let me know. thanks.
Is there room for a scoot in your group? I ride on most highways except for rt 80, I don't have the desire to try to keep with the traffic. 55 to 60 is the limit of my comfort zone on the scoot. Scubasteve, what questions do you have?
I've always worked on my own bikes as much as I could so if it's something basic maybe I can help you out. my problem is. I thought it was just the clutch cable, because the cable started to fray, so i replaced it. now the clutch is almost impossible to pull in. someone told me to try and change the oil and filter, and get as much of the clutch material out, but i have a feeling the clutch may have gone. i work on cars, havent done much with bikes. The clutch just isnt releasing. i rode home in first gear, and it wasnt slipping. so i'm trying to figure out if i need to tear the clutch apart and replace the discs, or if there may just be something im missing. i set the cable 2-3 mm like the manual says. but just wont release. it's a nice bike, and i dont want to get rid of it, but i want to be able to keep riding. I miss the 2 wheel world. so any advice will help. I live in mansfield village.
someone told me to just change my oil, run it, then change my oil again, and that it would clean it out. i changed it, and rode, changed it again, and the clutch cable got hard to pull again. any ideas..????? i want to ride again looks like the clutch needs ta be rebuilt. found a kit on ebay. barnett clutch. hopefully this works...
Ah, clutch problems can be fun. I had one basically explode in my KTM200 during a race... had to pick out tiny pieces of aluminum (from the plates) and my oil was a nice silver color for a long time.
Obviously if you've replaced the cable it's probably not that. Unless there's something in the mechanism where the cable goes into the engine housing (i.e. a lever arm) that isn't working properly, your clutch basket may have grooves worn into it.
The rebuild kit you got is probably just new friction plates, but when you get inside the clutch to change them, look at the fingers on the basket. If there are grooves worn into it, the "teeth" on the plates won't be able to slide in and out smoothly. If that's the case, the only solution is a new basket.
Also, I wouldn't reassemble the clutch cover until you figure out the problem, since you don't want to keep tearing the gasket apart if you have to get inside again.
true. i hae almost all the screws loosened. hopefully its just the clutches. nothing more. i'm gonna tear it apart once, since i cant really ride it. see what all is broke. then get everything i need. wheres a decent place local to get parts for a 1980 gs1000g. As far as local places you're probably stuck seeing where the closest Suzuki dealership is. I know they've kinda moved around a few times, but I think there's one around Randolph/Roxbury somewhere.
There may also be a few places online that sell Suzuki parts. Do a Google search for sites that have online parts microfiche and you may find some that have comparable or better prices than the local guys. (For example www.mrcycles.com has parts available for your bike - I've never used them but it was the first Google result).
Those sites are also great to just see the parts diagrams if you don't have a shop manual. I am really ticked off. I just got my renewel registration in the mail for my 750XR. Those Trenton Sc--b B--s want 65.00 dollars. I don't mind paying for a vehicle I drive 12 months a year, but the same price for a 2 wheel vehicle I ride 6 months or less. It's criminal. They get away with it. The filth that run this state are disgusting. Scubasteve-most likely the clutch is fine, the dis-engagement mechanism is out of adjustment. Don't disassemble the clutch until you check this out. If you got this bike from the guy from the radio station I've worked on it (I recognize it). Send me your address & I'll come look at it. Been riding/fixing bikes for 35 yrs. cv.. I looked all over for this post
I wanted to go out.. But i didnt see it the night before so I figured it wasn't happeneing 908-914-7809. i couldnt figure out how ta send a pm.
Ed,
Sorry I didn't post earlier. I was busy doing some stuff around the house and I just didn't get on the computer til the morning of the ride. I'll be away the next two weekends so no riding for me. However, I'm usually home by 6:00 to 6:30 PM during the week. i'd like to say a big thankyou to Mr.Moto. helped me out. turns out. the cable i got was bad. was not lubricated enough. so i took a bunch of 3-1 oil. and lubed it up nice, and clutch cable works fine now. still probably gonna get a new cable from the dealer just to be safe. But he saved me alot of money, and i'm definatly talkin to him bout any problems i have with the bike. Now i can ride again...woooohooooo...
gotta share this little gem just to show how dumb I can be.had a 67 triumph 650 one day all of a sudden it woulden't shift, stuck in gear.turns out the main trans.shaft bushing seized to the shaft.shoulda checked my trans oil more often. remember most british bikes had no gaskets on the side covers, finely machined and not supposed to leak.if any of you remember those days you could pretty much tell when a brit.motorcycle had been parked there, they always marked their territory with a few drops of oil.
