I'm a very firm believer in carrying a big stick - a ~really~ big stick - but the use of that stick must be accompanied by restraint. It's that restraint that I believe defines the US, but it has evaporated and that's what we need to get back.
AFA Afganistan, I have yet to hear a SINGLE valid reason for us being there. Bin Laden was there, but the ghost-like Al Queda ran and is gone. So what are we there for? Why is a third world, nomadic-like nation such a prize for us? And why are we having such a hard time "defeating" them? The only reason I can fathom, and Matt will likely agree ;), is it's strategic importance in dominating the transport and production of Middle Eastern energy resources. In a word - oil. The rest is propaganda dressed up as patriotism. One can be a patriot and NOT support the idiotic war in Afghanistan. As a matter of fact, I'd argue that the ~only~ real patriots are the ones with the courage to call that war for what it is - dominance and power in the region for expanding the American empire.
Now, for my 2 cents on Palin ;)
She is a nobody. OK, a pretty face on a politically-correct landscape in which the only thing people see are cosmetic. A distraction. She's a party hack, willing to sell the party regardless of her personal positions. Her resignation is very likely a strategy to move up on the national party ladder. Time will tell, but the signs are all there.
She, like the rest of the Republican field (and Democrat for that matter), doesn't give a rats as_ about making this country great. The two parties are opposite sides of the same coin in which the "game" is to consolidate as much power as possible and keep the population at bay. It's no wonder that most of the so called "legislation" is aggrandized and dumbed down for an uniformed public. A shell game, that's all. My views, which i've shared before, are that both major parties must go before we will ever have a chance at real change in this country.
Watch what happens to HR1207. It'll get killed, buried or stripped down to nothing as to make it impotent, all the while the politicians will make it look like they support it. Why? Because it would significantly affect ~both~ parties.
My advice it to get over the two party mentality.

Your big stick comment is correct, as is the one about restraint. Had we not been in Iraq in 1991, I would agree with you. The problem is that we used force then, and stopped using that force through an agreement with the aggressor (Hussein). He violated that agreement again and again until we called him out on it. We had to use force or every other nation (Iran, N. Korea, even China) would think that our agreements, threats, promises, and just our signature are worthless.
Afghanistan is another story. That nation can't keep terrorists from growing like cancer. The majority of the worlds Opium comes from Afghanistan, and that is where the terrorists get their money. Who are we to stop that? I don't know. I support the war in Iraq much more than Afghanistan.
I don't believe in being the world police. Kosovo was a prime example. Most of sub-saharan africa, parts of southeast asia, and some pacific islands need some real help, but who are we to intervene? I would argue the original protection of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait as being "for oil". The second time around was to use our big stick so N. Korea and Iran know we don't screw around when you sign your name next to America's on a document.
N. Korea is now stating that the armistice is over (you know, the agreement that "ended" the Korean War). So essentially they know that our new president is not as quick with his draw as the last president. We will see how this ends up.

The executive has to make decisions, although as we seen in recent times, the decision process often experiences significant delays.
So is Sarah worthy of higher office? In your mind, never. I will answer the question in a relative way. Compared to a community organizer (Street Thug), who from the time he was elected to the U.S. Senate logged in a total of 45 days as a LEGISLATOR and could always be relied on to vote "Present" with regard to any legislation, Yes, compared to that person, who is known as Obama, Sarah is eminently qualified. NosocialismJul '09 link · flag Nosocialism shows my concern with some aspects of a few not all people on the faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar right of the political spectrum. Why is it that Nosocialism had to emphasis Obamas middle name? Call it what you want it just reminds people of his fathers Middle Eastern background which stirs up hate for some.
I am a supporter of our troops in the Middle East even though Bush screwed up by sending them to Iraq. All the $ we could have saved and the American lives that would have been spared because of Bush’s actions is mind boggling.
Iran now is a bigger problem with nuclear power. At least Iraq was a deterrent to Iran now Iran can run wild. I support Israel’s right to exist even though I feel it is to our best interest to talk to Islamic governments first before attacking them.
It still infuriates me that clearly some have issues that Obamas dad was a Muslim from Africa. Why use his middle name when discussing Obama? We rarely use middle names? In the Bush case we had no choice because of Bush #I.
I cannot support the Republican Party blindly. I clearly favor the Dems on social issues. I have always supported a strong military presence around the world. Bush just picked the wrong place. A third party is needed. Neither Party I agree with fully.
Iraq is not won if we pulled out the troops it would be turmoil. Just a few days ago there was another terrorist attack in Iraq to try to undermine our presence there. Once we leave forget about it.
As for any topic on education I have made my arguments over the years. The people who support public education on this forum do speak up, but have learned the debate is one that is better off less debated. All I can say is you really need to be in the schools and not just a parent or a tax payer to truly understand the obstacles when it comes to students, teachers and the administration. It is not simple.
I will agree on this that public education should not be primarily supported by property taxes. All the other issues I will not comment on any more at this time. When people attack your profession and your character constantly, it grows tiresome.
Bush II was a failure and will go down historically as one of the worst presidents in history. He brought us to the point we are at now. Obama is cleaning up the mess. No matter what Obama does people on the right side of the political spectrum will never agree with any of his actions.
Capitalism is not perfect times change and adjustments have to be made to insure that Capitalism will survive for ever.
If Palin or Newt wind up leading the Republican Party Obama will be a two term president. If you consider yourself on the far right of the Political spectrum then the people you support are not candidates that people in the middle of the political spectrum would vote for. If you cannot see that then you will see in the 2012 once again that your candidate was not supported.
Why is it that people on the right side of the Political spectrum cannot give credit to Bill Clinton. He lowered the debt ran a smaller government then George W and times were prosperous during his presidency. Again I give credit when it is due. I loved Reagan he won the Cold War I recognized that Clinton even though he was a buffoon when it came to his personal life did a good job as president. I can also recognize that Bush learned nothing from Reagan. matt Jul '09 link · flag A quote from Nobama's book The Audacity of Hope: "I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

Nothing wrong with being a muslim, its just a question of honesty. By the way, its only the faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar left that seems to get so bent out of shape when anyone mentions Obama's middle name. Since one of the things I personally enjoy is invoking the anger of the left. You bet I am going to invoke his middle name from time to time. Sarah Palin, Who and What does she offer as VP of the USA
DIY- Sept. 1 2008, 6:09
Here's what Newt Gingrich had to say in praise (or defense) of McCain's choice of running mate on Fox News yesterday:
1. She is experienced in governing.
He failed to mention 8 of those years were spent as a town councilwoman for home town with a population of 6,700 people. (Heck, several of my friends serve on town councils!)
She was Mayor of that same small town. By comparison Hackettstown, NJ, has a population of about 9,300 and the Mayor's job is part-time.
She has been Governor of Alaska for less than 2 years. Gingrich fortifies his defense by noting the population of Alaska is comparable to that of Arkansas. I wonder if he thinks the population density and demographics of those two states are comparable!
2. For two years she served as head of the "National Guard."
Mind you he didn't say she served in the National Guard...and failed to mention that every Governor is the head of his or her state's National Guard or whether or not she every had to actually call out the National Guard for her state.
3. After that he said she was "talented." He verified this by saying: (I swear I'm not making this up)
She plays the flute.
She played on her state basketball team
She got a scholarship for being second place runner-up to Miss Alaska
Her dad is a Science teacher
Her husband is a Labor official
He went on to say the people who would criticize her small town experience are engaging in "Big East" thinking. Well, Newt, somebody has to do it. Why not the East? What about Chicago? Detroit?
You can tell a good leader by the people he (or she) places around him. They understand their strengths and weaknesses and put people in places that will help them lead. As far as I'm concerned, Obama showed sound judgment and made a "management decision" taking what is best for the country into consideration.
McCain's decision was strictly political thinking only about what will get him elected. Seriously, is this who we want running the country if John McCain cannot finish out his term? Heck, Hackettstown's mayor is probably more qualified (he's a lawyer) than McCain's choice (her degree is in journalism) but he unfortunately lacks the necessary plumbing.
Now we have to sit back and wait to see if the American people are as stupid as Gingrich (et. al.) think they are. ReggieJul '09 link · flag LOL, I'll give credit to Bill Clinton... he's as much to blame for the giant sh*t sandwich this country is eating right now as anyone, Bush included.

Capitalism is dead and free markets no longer exist because the government has it's paws firmly into just about everything these days.
Times have definitely changed and there is no going back without revolution at this point. The government is now openly and blatantly taking over private companies (we-the-people are now the proud owners of 61% of the new GM) and the government is subsidizing the banking industry to the tune of trillions of dollars. That's not capitalism!
"I wonder what most of you would be doing/saying right now if the Government did not step in to avoid the oncoming Depression? "
Regrouping instead of preparing for long term misery. Our government is so out of control it's not even remotely funny. As an example, I watched a video the other day of a Republican Senator attempting to insert an amendment into an appropriations bill. His request was knocked down by the majority (the Dems) because of "rule 16" which basically states that legislative actions can not be put into an appropriations bill. It is extremely sad to see this Senator point out, and have the Senate President confirm, all of the other amendments ~already~ in the bill that clearly violate the same rule 16. It is ~blatant~ corruption, for the world to see, but for some strange reason we, the citizens, just don't care!
Our ~system~ MUST change and that's why I keep saying that we have to get away from party politics and start dealing with the problems instead of just playing the game in it's current form. justintimeJul '09 link · flag "So is Sarah worthy of higher office? In your mind, never"
Nosocialism, why do you say that? You know nothing about me. You had a good opportunity to lay the facts on the table, but instead you chose to make assumptions about me based on a simple question.
That's the problem with both sides of the spectrum - instead of focusing on the positive and simply presenting your opinion, everyone bashes and insults the other side. Why is this? Do you think it will make "your side" look better?
Also, I didn't ask you if Palin is more qualified than Obama. I asked why you like Sarah Palin. Can you answer without mentioning Obama? Or can she not stand on her own qualifications? MB Jul '09 link · flag Ianimal you bring up a good point. Clinton was not perfect, but if you look at his entire body of work it was pretty good. Of course you have to ignore his actions with Monica. Clinton was not a moral president, but neither are most of our presidents. Nixon did great things when it came to foreign policy, but knew the law was being broken. Clinton just did not want to admit that he could not keep it in his pants. Again Clinton was a buffoon when it came to his personal life.
We can look at every president and show negatives. Reagan in the Iran/Contra affair. Traded arms with Iran for hostages what a great plan! Still a great president!
Clinton actually took away Gov. Regulation which is a Republican action. It backfired and you are right it did not help us down the road.
If McCain was president would we be invading more countries stretching our military even thinner and spending trillions of dollars around the world for wars we cannot win.
The sun never sets on England was a famous saying well that saying is now inaccurate. America if they continue to spread troops around the world will follow the English path and some day will not be leading the world.
The UK was the world’s leader from 1820 to around 1914. One could argue a few years, but that is almost a 100 years. We have only been on top for around 65. Will we last as long as England?
Obama by showing some restraint might keep us on top. -Marine General James Mattis, to Iraqi tribal leaders
"The raising of that flag on Suribachi means a MARINE CORPS for the next 500 years."
-JAMES FORRESTAL, SECRETARY OF THE NAVY
"So they've got us surrounded, good! Now we can fire in any direction, those b*****ds won't get away this time!"
-CHESTY PULLER, USMC
“So the important thing in a military operation is victory, not persistence.”
-Sun Tzu
War is cruelty. There's no use trying to reform it, the crueler it is the sooner it will be over.
-William Tecumseh Sherman
Once we have a war there is only one thing to do. It must be won. For defeat brings worse things than any that can ever happen in war.
---Ernest Miller Hemmingway---
The purpose of war is not to die for your country. The purpose of war is to ensure that the other guy dies for his country."
- General Patton
After thinking about the flag raising on Iwo Jima, the fall of Berlin, The surrender on the USS Missouri, I wonder what the libs want to see. Instead of Lt. In order to extend our arm forces you are going to need a draft. That is not going to happen. It would be 1968 all over again. Protests in Washington draft card burning. Now if we were attacked in America again maybe people would step up, but under the current circumstances people are not going to support a draft.
The UK felt they were by far the dominant power in the world for many years. They never thought the empire would crumble. India, South Africa, Canada, Palestine, Hong Kong, Singapore the list goes on and on. The sun never sets on England was a true statement, but over time the UK could not keep it up.
The American arm forces are still #1! In order to continue a military expansion we are still going to need to increase our arm forces. Again that is just not going to happen under the current conditions. This means we can only extend our selves so much which limits our international actions. matt Jul '09 link · flag Matt....Where are you getting your stats?? We have no need for a draft. We have 1.4 MILLION hard chargers on active duty. We have about 170,000 in Southwest Asia (Iraq and Afghanistan AOR's)...So doing the math, only about 12% of our troops are in the theater of operations.
Why do liberals (i.e. Chuck Schumer and Charlie Rangel) keep bringing up the draft? We have recruiting at RECORD levels. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24584577/
Yes I used an MSLSD link. The Corps rose its strength to 202,000. The Army is having no problems recruiting either. The Navy and Air Force are both DOWNSIZING. Infantry units are going through rapid deployment cycles. But most are getting equal dwell to deploy ratio's. Meaning if you deploy for 7 months you should be home for at least 7.
Many troops go in the advance party and stay in the rear party because they enjoy the field. They like the tax free pay and extra haz duty and combat pay. They like not having to see Nancy Pelosi talk out her a**.
We will have no problem being victorious. Unless we throw in the towel because of "cultural insensitivities".
