Wildlife in our yards - who has pics?
We live in Port Murray and always have a lot of wildlife about. Would love to see shots of what others find visiting them. Today we had two beautiful water snakes on our rock walls - One was camera shy :)
Toad decided to pay a visit to my yard over night. This thing looks so unnatural just sprouting in the middle of my yard.
Mr. & Mrs. Duck swimming in our pool before we had a chance to open it in May.
2 fawns who were born this year...in my backyard...they were still nursing from the mother doe...this pictures was taken 1 week ago we see them just about everyday
i dont have any pics but in the spring/summer i woke up and looked out my window and saw 5 dear eating crab apples. i was ganna take a pic but some jerk speed by and scared
I had a pileated woodpecker last week....but he flew away before a photo....still watching for him!
Love, love, love all your pictures, Chiman, not sure about the snake though, LOL. Glad he's in your yard and not mine! Wonderful pictures, keep posting please!
Saw what appeared to be a downy woodpecker pecking on my garage this morning. The carpenter bees took exception and he kept trying new spots. I'll have to try to get a picture next time.
It took some time to sneak up on this baby, it ran right after I snapped this picture.
We've got this rooster hanging around my office building. He comes up to the glass door and checks himself out all the time.
That's so funny Boog - where is that rooster? I know there are a few that hang off of Beatty St. That's a chunky one!
Thank you Firefly!! Mushrooms are the most vile, nauseating things on this earth. GROSS!
Now Tracy, are you saying that you find the shape of the mushrooms growing in my yard to be vile, nauseating and gross, or the mushrooms themselves?
Just curious.
A bear was spotted on Flocktown Road in Long Valley yesterday morning - ran right in front of my son's bus.
STILL no photos to contribute. But with all this rain, I am expecting fish to be swimming by the window any minute now......
Suspected bunnies were eating the hostas in my yard, but went out one morning to find this!! So it was the tortoise, not the hare!!
Uh oh..where on Flocktown? That's where we are. Haven't seen one since he greeted us in our driveway last Labor Day. Always nice to meet the neighbors:)
My mother in law had a bear get into her trash and she looked out and he was sitting down on his behind drinking french dressing out of the bottle, lol!
The rooster has been hanging around Valentine St. and Stiger St. He just happens to come up to our office building and check himself out. He's a hit or miss at our building.
We have guinea hen that kind of belongs to the neighborhood. There were two of them last spring, but now just the one for quite a while. We call him "Roger", not sure why. I've been trying to get his picture but he's too quick for me.
We see the rooster all the time. My DD named him Alfred and we have done short stories on him. He is a gorgeous rooster.
That is one of the two roosters who have made our place of business their home. (We are on Stiger St.) They came to us a couple of years ago from the auction on Tuesdays. They roost here every night and have helped foster wild kittens. Recently they got into a fight with one another and one disappeared. We have seen him wondering around, its nice to see he is doing well. He looks great!
do you want me to let you know when he is at our office here on valentine street?also
what is he eating do you think?
Not too sure what he is eating...we used to feed him here. He likes doughnuts too, lol. I don't think the other rooster will let him come back. Male dominance thing.
i've always wondered who's roosters those were. i've seen them while driving & can hear them from my house sometimes. i'm a heavy sleeper though so it's ok, lol
My sister just saw this Momma and her twins nursing on the side of the road. She snapped a quick pix.
Right you are Jay - hostas and hydrangea are super deer magnets. My aunt in PA has a big deer problem because she has a whole lawn of hostas underneath some big trees. Come for the hosta, stay for the rest of the garden...
Mushroom guy, it's not your mushrooms. It's all mushrooms. Big and small, on my plate or in my yard. I don't like seeing them, touching my food, or even on the same plate. I especially hate when they show up on my food when the menu made no mention of them. I don't know where this phobia came from, but I am extremely grossed out by them.
I've always been a fan of wildlife. Can anyone post a photo of a bobcat, coyote, eagle or other not seen often creatures in NJ. Im talking a local photo not one from Wyoming or some other country.
Coming soon...pics of the baby muskrats! Saw them today but couldn't get close enough before it started to pour. So adorable.....i guess until they start eating the rest of the fountain grass.
i just spotted this today...in my neighbors yard...i was lucky to have my camera handy
Question, not in our yard, but on Waterloo Rd on my way home from work. I keep seeing these large birds on Waterloo Rd, very large wingspan. Has anyone seen them and do you know what they are. They look menacing, and no, they're not those darn wild turkeys, LOL!
Bessie - Does it have a head that sort of is turkey like? If so, that's a turkey vulture. I've seen those back that way gathered around road kill of one type or another.
I don't think it's a turkey vulture, they're always flying pretty high when I see them. I'm going to try to bring my camera with me and see if I can get a picture.
We had those birds in our neighborhood about 2 weeks ago. Seems they found a dead animal in the woods across the street from me. My BIL said they are turkey vultures and he said they are pretty large.
Tracy,
I'm with you on the mushroom phobia, but I know where mine came from...
I was about a year old and was wandering in the yard while my father did yardwork. He was supposed to be keeping an eye on me. Well, he didn't do a great job. He found me eating wild mushrooms right out of the yard and since he didn't know what kind they were, and some are poisonous, I had to go to the ER. The doctors gave me something to "bring them up" but it didn't work. When nothing happened they figured I was ok so they sent us home. Five minutes in the car and the medicine did it's job. All the mushrooms and whatever else I'd eaten that day came up. All on a hot summer day in a cramped VW Beetle. I haven't willingly touched a mushroom since. Heck, I don't even want to be in the same zip code as those darn veggies...
Caught this coyote on my deer cam a few months ago.. Pretty scary, we hear them howling at night.
I call it a deer cam.. It is a motion detecting camera that i have on a tree out back. It's pretty cool, get lots of wildlife pics on it.
I know what you mean Bessie. They look like decoration. I think they are real though. Correct me if I'm wrong. KQ that's really cool. Are you out in Great Meadows?
wow, somehow i missed this great pic.
KQ, the motion detecting camera is a great idea. The deer and fox together is a great shot, as is the pic of the bears. I would love to see more as you get them! Thanks for sharing.
Wow KQ your pics are awesome! Tho it is a shame that all of these are wandering in your yard in broad daylight, must make it hard for your kids to feel safe in your back yard with bears rambling through all the time. They need to stop hogging the swing set. :)
I heard that a lady in Mansfield last week called the police and swore she saw a black panther cat on Watters Rd. It sat in the middle of the road like a domesticated cat and after a while walked onto a farm. Has anyone heard about this?
KQ--I just recently read about "deer cam's" and would really like to get one for our yard. Where did you get yours and what was the approx cost?
Thanks!
I got my deer cam from Cabellas. You can check them out on their website. There are a lot of different kinds. I would recommend the Moultrie 5.0 Outfitter Camera with Built-In Viewer. It's about $200, pretty expensive, but you can see the pictures right on it and it also takes an SD card which you can plug right into your computer to view and print pics.
Thanks for the chuckle Joe.... I needed that!
We have a family of turkeys in our yard. A red fox who stops by for a visit every now and again...lots of pretty birdies hang around the feeder and a very fat bear who helps himself to the birdfeeder every now and again. And of course, the turkey buzzards and deer are always around :-)
Lots of activity here in Warren County!!
is that Wally and Harold? i heard they won 1st and 2nd place in the Duck Race this year. . . good times.
All that wildlife looks tasty! Whats in season now and who has grandma's recipe book?
Here is a great photo from 2 week ago. A friendly visit from our local friend. Photo was taken on Hoffman Road in Mansfield Twp.
Joseph,
What a magnifinet photo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!! OMG!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Probably not considered wildlife...but theses showed up in my yard yesterday...mother and 8 chicks...anyone know what breed of chicken this is ?
Joseph,
What a beautiful bear! The ones around my house must be young because they are all gangly, not filled out like yours. Great pic!
I think your pic is showing an Ameraucana--I live in Independence and we have several in our flock that we let free roam during the day. Most of the time they lay eggs in the coop nests but occasionally they lay an egg or two in a mulch pile and take turns sitting on them. I hope they find their way back home..the chicks are vulnerable out in the open like that.
Predator,
Looks like a RI Red & we breed them. Good egg layers. Are you keeping them?
fishmaker, reminds me of the time i was feeding my friends chickens outside, having a relaxing fun time;within seconds a hawk swooped down and took off with one of the chicks.:( i felt so guilty, then reality set in, it's the circle of life.
i still get teased at how upset i was at that hawk. lol
anyone keep chickens? Not necessarily on the farm or barn, but chickens in your backyard....wondering what the pros or cons might be...
