Poor Boys Pizza Closing Up

Just heard today Poor Boys Pizza will be closing at the end of the month.....now where will I get good pizza ?

is that the place in hastings?

There are lots of old threads on good pizza - search it on this site.

Personally, I like Enzo's and Prontos

Can it be so good if it is closing?

Mama's is my favorite in Hackettstown but there is a place in Washington called Family's that is probably the best i have ever had!

Too many restaurants in area......not enough people...probably see some more closing...

Pronto's has very good pie, not to mention their broccoli rabe and stuffed artichokes. I was never a fan of Poor Boys pizza but I feel bad they are closing. As Pred said..Too many restaurants in area......not enough people. The best will survive.

Family Pizza used to be here in Hackettstown..and yes it was incredible pizza..best I had in the area.

Speaking of Pronto's, you gotta try their 28" pizza. My kids love getting it because of the size of the slices, LOL.

justme, is that the same Family Pizza that is now in Washington? If so, I tried it recently and the sauce was way too sweet for my taste.

Poor Boys has the best subs. I hadn't heard they were closing. I'll have to get over there and find out if they are going to be somewhere else.

Too bad , they made an INCREDIBLE Sicilian Pie there

Is Poor Boys the one in Mansfield in the strip mall across from Kohl's?

take a drive a little ways into LV and hit Salerno's....THE BEST SICILIAN EVER!!!

I drove past Salerno's Sunday and it didn't look open.

Calico - yes, that's the one. It's not always slow sales that make these places go under. Look how many cases within the past couple of years are just people retiring.

oh wow....
i was there a couples of days ago...
Thats my favorite local pizza.....

I think it was in a poor location, so I'm sure that didn't help much.

I was there a few days ago, we had great pizza, and wonderful subs. The only drawback no air conditioning, so hot in there with the ovens going, but the food is always sooooo good.. sad to see them go.

Never tried Poor Boys. Actually, I have only been in that shopping plaza once for the hair salon.

Franks Pizza is good.. Mama's is great. Pietro's is good

Mama's pizza isn't that good, way too salty. Plus you have to deal with the guy that put his likeness on the billboard.

heres a good pizza place...i know its a little far from hackettstown...DiCola's pizza on rt 31 in washington new jersey...the pizza is out of this world...and they have a monster Cheese Steak...the cheese steak is worth the ride... trust me...you wont be disappointed...sorry to hear about poor boys

Jamie & Paul always had very good pizza, subs and hot wings. I think their prices just got too high. Plus, as some people pointed out, there are too many places to eat in greater hackettstown.. I remember driving all the way down Asbury Anderson road to visit The "Shangri-la" which had some very good menu items. That was back wen the only chinese restaurant in hackettstown was KAM FU.

Enzo's across from M&M's is our favorite. Excellent sauce.

What about DiMaio's on Main Street?

is Good Fellows still there on Main Street? Their pie was good

I don't like DiMaio's sauce...way too sweet!

Goodfellows changed to Tu Tierra which eventually converted to a carribbean type restaurant. Supposedly it's really good.

I'm with you Alison. We tried DiMaio's a couple of times and the sauce was always too sweet for my liking.

thanks, Bryan :)

Bryan - Tu Tierra = Tex/Mex, Columbian, and Costa Rican. No Caribbean. But if it helps, I'm now hungry for some jerk chicken. ;-)

Ok thanks. Not sure where i got that from!

I'm hoping someone starts another pizza thread soon! ;-)

I like Enzo's but their prices are too high.

Calico - Sssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! Better pizza than politics.

well first off i have to say if you really think mommas pizza is that damb good well i feel sorry for you..2nd Anyone who thinks pronto's is good well sorry to hear that to.. they haven't been that good since jimmy sold the place
when poorboy's opened it was in an OK area because there were only like 4 pizzerias in the area. Over the past 18 yrs since poorboy's has been there Italian restaurants have doubled almost tripled....poorboy's wont be the only one closing...the only reason benzi's and enzos does decent is beacause they have a bar..The only reason mommas does as good as they do is cause they have been around for 30 yrs or so. With the economy in the toilet and a crap load of Italian restaurants in the area many other pizzerias/Italian restaurants will be struggling as well.
So all I have left to say is farewell Poorboy's you were honestly one of the best around

Poorboys was good most of the time but always dirty. Did they ever clean that place? Its not just italian food places that will be closing.I predict Bensi's will eventually close due to not enough volume as will others.Every time I watch Diners Drive-ins and Dives I ask myself why we don't have those types of joints around here.

I recently went to Jefferson Diner after seeing them on Diners-Drive-Ins & Dives...I hade a roast beef club...the roast beef was processed like Arbys....and they used what tasted like knock off mayo...upon paying... the owner asked me how was everything...when I gave her my opinion...all she said was everyone else likes them....last time I ever eat there....I eat lunch & dinner almost everyday on the road....I think I know what good food tastes like...

Predator What a stupid response from that owner. I will cross that place off my to go list. Getting back to pizza I really dont think anyone is making a decent pie around here. I did here that Mattars has great pies at half price for happy hour. My friend had a buffalo chicken pie and said it was awesome. They also have a goat cheese pie which I will try when I make it there.

I ate more than once at Poor Boys - and it was plenty clean. Hackettstown is a great place to eat. I'm very happy with what we have.

I didnt eat there often but the times I did you could see the dust ,lint or whatever you want to call it hanging from above the cooking area. Other than that the food was satisfying except for one occasion when I got spaghetti and meatballs to go. I have also heard that Carlena's has good pies and will give them a shot soon.

I like DiMaio's. It's been my favorite for years.

Sometimes, their pizza isn't fresh, which is unfortunate; but when it is, it is the best.

I think Carlena's pizza is delicious but small and pricey, JMO.

Ocino used to make a white clam pizza that was out of this world... I haven't seen it anywhere else and would love to see Carlena's add it to their menu.

Has anyone had Mattars pizza? How was it .......... and is it an individual pizza (size-wise) or does it serve more than one?

Its a sad thing that Poor Boys is closing up. They had the best Cheesesteaks around.....and garlic knots!!!

PREDATOR- you should really give j-town diner a second chance!!! They do have a ton of great food and a huge variety. The lady owner there is not the nicest at times, but the brothers are extremely nice. My Dad lives in Jefferson and we have been going there for years. Hope you give it another try!!!

Too bad about Poor Boys , although I prefer Sonnys and Peitros , their pie was decent . With all the nail salons and piazza palors in town , half it's residents would have to be Carmela Soprano for them all to thrive ! I suppose Mamas is good , if you like your crust paper thin and cheese like chewing gum . Only the nostalgia factor there for me , since they were the place to go after a movie at the Mall Theater in the 70s - their lousy pizza hasn't changed a bit ! Back then Attilios in the Mansfield strip mall , between Jamesway and B and B Liquers had the best pizza in town .

The Poor Boys owners are not closing, just going on vacation for a while. He told me that the other night I was in there.

GREAT news - thank-you!

I was there last week and he told me as of the end of the month, they were closing, but he is taking emails for friends and said if he was going to open up another place he would let us know thru email.

chrisb - I was told the same thing. Hope he does open another place soon.

I heard they were closing because it was so dirty no one would go there anymore.

I have found one of the best pizzas anywhere...Ciabottis on Shippenport Road in Landing..they also have a coupon on www.restaurant.com...very thin crust...and tasty...had it 3 times this past week...its worth the ride.

Sonny's is going to be the closest thing to the caliber of pizza that Poor Boys has (or had) to offer...Too many reastaurants in the area and a somewhat hidden away location did not help them...not to mention MANY people would not know GOOD FOOD if it hit em in the head! Best of luck to the guys from Poor Boys!

Tommorow..July 3rd will be Poor Boys last Day....I wish them well in their future endeavors..Good Luck.

I LOVED poor Boys.. they had the best pizza around. The guys are always so nice and they worked so very hard. I too wish them luck.. They definitely deserve a little downtime.

If you don't mind the drive to Great Meadow's Louie's Pizza is the best around and cheap too. You might want to try a Cheesteak as well 5$ feeds two!!

Interestingly enough the people who own and run Enzo's Pasta Grill were the original owners of Attilio's in the Shop Rite shopping center.

Also interestingly enough is that Louie's Pizza in Great Meadow is the guy that owned the pizza store in the former Hackettstown Mall !

Almost all of these pizza places need to clean up their stores.

Plus they shouldn't be handling money and touching the food without washing their hands first.

I for one, can't get enough bacteria into my life! I'm stocking up, building up my immune system for when the great plague hits! Only the strong shall survive!!! ;-)

Where is this dirty pizza place anyway? :-D

Has anyone tried the new place that opened up in the space where Poor Boys used to be? It's called Ultimate Pizza and advertises $.99 slices and a luncheon special of $2.99.

I believe its the same guys from Hasting Square
