They were in the area of Grand Ave about a week ago. They will leave a sticky note on your door saying they were there. They do not go on the house apparently.

Received an official stick-um Tuesday nite on front door telling when they would be back, Thursday evening. Took about 5 minutes.

The assessment guy was at our house yesterday around 5:30. He walked around the outside then came in for about 15 minutes. It would probably have only taken 10, but my daughter wanted him to see her room....then she had to give him a few hugs and remind him to tie his shoes.

Mine was here last week - they are just finishing up Brook Hollow. The guy was a bit talkative, I can certainly see him talking more time for reasons other than the review, Saxton.

Firefly, the note on the door says not only that they were there but when they'll be back to do the inside. If you can't make the time listed, there's a number to make arrangements of when you'll be there to do the inside. They do a simple walk through of how many bed rooms, how many bathrooms, etc.

Yes...they do come into your home...counted how many rooms ...checked to see if basement & attic were finished.

My father in law says legally you don't have to let them in, is this true?

If you dont let them in ...your 3br... 2ba..home will probably assess as a 4br..3ba..home.

Legally you don't have to let them in but then they will make assumptions about your house and base your assessment on those assumptions. This may result in your assessment being higher than it really should be but that is the risk you take if you don't allow them in. In any case you will have an opportunity to appeal your assessment but at the hearing you will have to provide documentation as to why the assessment is wrong. So why not just let them in and have them assess you correctly to begin with? Just my opinion. :)

That stinks. I don't like strange people coming in my house.

Just bumping this up. What exactly are they looking for in the house? Improvements or just seeing how many bedrooms & bathrooms? Do you get a copy of the assessment?

Want to know - They are looking for both. They want to verify the house is still the same as it is listed on the current records for number of bedrooms and baths and they want to see if you have made any improvements that will increase the value of the house - granite countertops, ect. Some of the improvements you make to a house require a permit so they will have those on file but many improvements do not so they need to inspect the house to see if they have been made. And then of course there are always the people who make the improvements that require a permit but never get the proper permits. You will get a copy of the assessment and you then will be given a period of time to appeal the amount if you think it is incorrect.

No because you could always convert back to a 4-bedroom.

My house on willow grove was done well over a month ago. no assessment papers yet. the guy came in looked around took notes and left. sure glad i haven't done improvements. they say the crappier your house looks the cheaper the taxes. we'll see if it makes a difference.

jaz1894 - go back to your neighbor and stop the misinformation. If you go up to my post on June 12 you'll see the answer.

BLD, any people I don't know. I have spent years reading mysteries, watching crime dramas, and watching those dateline specials about serial killers, so that now I am a huge fraidy cat and continuously fear being murdered by a stranger in my home, LOL!! I know, I know, totally irrational, but I still don't like having strangers in my house.

Sandy - And that makes sense - you should have a "healthy" concern for your safety. But unless you live in a cave in the most remote region of the world you are always going to be among "strangers". For instance if you had a medical issue in your home and strangers from the Rescue Squad came would you deny them access? It's a matter of risk versus benefit. You don't have to let the assessors into your home but then you may risk getting a wrong assessment. Only you can decide what level of risk you are willing to assume.

One of my favorite shows on TV that is no longer on was Rescue 911. It was very inspirational because it showed many examples of total strangers helping people, (and in some cases risking their own safety). Unfortunately those stories are now overshadowed by stories of people who helped others and then got screwed by ungrateful people or by all the stories you alluded to.
